Baby Registry 101

A few mama friends and family of mine have been working on their baby registries recently and they’ve asked for my input so I figured why not share with my other mama friends!

I find creating a baby registry to be SO MUCH FUN! It’s kinda like shopping for things without having to pay for them. Then hoping that all the time you spent walking around the store or creating it online was not in vain and that you actually receive most of the things you chose as gifts!

I did my registry at Babies R Us a year before it sadly closed down. If you’re bummed out about them closing down just as much as I am, don’t worry mama, there are a few other places you could go to set up your registry.

Places to make a registry:

BUY BUY BABY

I believe that Buy Buy Baby is the closest you’ll get to the Babies R Us registry experience. The workers at the store are very helpful and knowledgeable in the products, you can actually sit with an associate and they’ll walk you through all of the top products and how to set up your registry. At Buy Buy Baby you have tons of options on the same type of product and you get to physically walk around the store with a scanner gun, which happens to be my favorite part of the whole experience.

TARGET

Target is another fabulous place to do a registry. I feel like they’ve stepped their baby section game up ever since the close of Babies R Us. I think that Target is convenient because I mean who doesn’t go to Target? It’s also welcoming to parents creating a registry. Some Targets have their own little registry section where you can sit with a store associate to get details on how to create your registry, and they also allow you to scan around with a scanner gun! Fun, fun!

AMAZON

I am an Amazon Prime fanatic so I will always vouch for Amazon because of it’s convenience. I like their registry option and the convenience people have of just shipping the gift directly to you. The only thing I don’t like is not being able to walk around the store and go scanner crazy! If you’re a first-time mama, looking at something online versus looking at something in person really makes a difference. When doing your registry at a store you get to see and feel the products. You also get exposure to different baby products you may never have seen or thought you needed until this point. If this is your second or third time around and you just don’t mind picking and choosing online, go ahead girl! What can’t you find on Amazon?!

FYI- You can do MORE THAN ONE REGISTRY! Do what works best for you and choose from the places that have the things you like the most.

Okay so now that I’ve shared the places I think are best to make a registry, here’s more important info!

TOP REGISTRY ESSENTIALS:

#1 DIAPERS AND WIPES!

You’re going to need A LOT of these bad boys! Put all sizes of diapers from newborn to size 4 or 5. Trust me when I say you will appreciate every single pack you don’t have to go to the store to buy.

#2 BABY FIRST AID KIT WITH THERMOMETER

These things come in handy and it’s great to be well prepared.

#3 BOTTLES AND FORMULA (IF YOU ARE NOT BREASTFEEDING)

There are SO many different brands of bottles, with different features and ratings. Two key elements when choosing your bottles: #1 Are they easy to clean? #2 Do they come with various size nipples to change as the baby grows? **If you are breast feeding, be aware of nipple confusion! If you plan on bottle feeding AND breastfeeding, choose a nipple closest to the shape of your actual nipple.

#4 BABY MONITOR

This really comes in handy when you need to step away from the baby! As he/she sleeps you can watch them from another room. Then, when they get older you can watch them be mischievous when you’re not around! Ha!

#5 BATH WASH, SHAMPOOS, LOTIONS

Just like adults there are thousands of skin care brands out there for babies. I recommend the most naturals ones out there because although many products claim to be safe for babies, many of them are still made with lots of harsh chemicals. Pick the brands that you like and add them to your registry because people love giving this type of stuff as gifts but you want to specify your preferences because if not they’ll grab whatever is convenient.

#6 BABY BATHTUB

Aw, I remember Lucas’ first bath time as if it were yesterday! It was a disaster, haha but it’s definitely a memory I will cherish forever. Pick a bathtub that works with your home, your tub, and that’s safe and easy to use.

#7 INFANT CAR SEAT/ TRAVEL SYSTEM

This right here is probably the most stressful thing to pick out and I’m not sure why. Maybe because there are so many options?! Car seat and stroller or Travel system. I really can’t tell you which is better because it truly depends on your lifestyle and living conditions. I know it’s a lot to think about! But despite how tedious it is to pick one of these out, you NEED it. Do your research, find one that is suitable for your family, and make sure that whatever you choose is not too heavy or too bulky (that’s where I failed when picking mine). Last thing you want is for you to be out alone with your baby and you can’t even take the stroller out of the trunk or just open because it’s too heavy.

#8 BABY CRIB, MATTRESS AND OR BASSINET

Yup, you need one of these so envision that nursery and choose away. I personally like the convertible cribs because you can use it while they are small, convert it to a toddler bed as they grow, and then to a twin size bed when they become really big babies!

#9 CRIB SHEETS SET

Like I said above, envision that nursery!

#10 PACK AND PLAY

These come in handy when you are traveling but also when you just want to put the baby somewhere else rather than their crib or bassinet.

#11 BABY BOUNCER OR SWING

Lucas LOVED his swing and bouncer. I think most babies find swaying and bouncing really soothing so I highly recommend you get one or both of these.

OTHER THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADD:

  • ROCKING CHAIR
  • HAMPER
  • DIAPER PAIL
  • HUMIDIFIER
  • A BOPPY (ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE BREASTFEEDING!)
  • BABY CARRIER/ BABY WRAP
  • WASHCLOTHS
  • BIBS AND BURP CLOTHS
  • MILK STORAGE BAGS (iF YOU PLAN ON PUMPING)
  • HOODED BABY TOWELS
  • CLOTHING: ONESIES, CLOTHES TO GO OUT, COMFY CLOTHES FOR HOME, JACKETS, SWEATERS
  • SWADDLES/SLEEP SACKS
  • GENTLE LAUNDRY DETERGENT
  • TOYS
  • PACIFIERS
  • GIFT CARDS

*TIPS*

*One of the best tips an experienced associate at Babies R Us gave me while doing my registry was to avoid putting so many clothes on your registry. People will buy you baby clothes whether you ask for it or not. Grandmas and auties LOVE buying every cute thing they see for their newest member of the family so don’t go clothes crazy. You want to make sure that people get you the essentials first, instead of you having to buy them yourself!

*Don’t overdo it with the swaddle blankets or pacifiers! Your baby may not even like to be swaddled and they may not want to use a pacifier. Lucas used a pacifier for probably 2 months and then all of a sudden didn’t care for it anymore. Same for swaddles. Actually, thinking about it now, I don’t think he ever really liked swaddles except for the first few days. I always found him with his arms outside the swaddle. My point is, I know they look so cute and cozy, but don’t put 10 on your registry, you don’t want to have to deal with returning things later on.

*If you choose to do an in store registry, go on a day you don’t have any other obligations. Go with a full belly. Don’t go alone! Just have fun!

I hope this helps ease any anxiety you have about creating a registry and that it gets you excited to go out and create one!
